Yo dude.
A good job with the electric guitar.
I am having a bit of a problem hearing the vocals. Where are they from btw?
Excellent atmosphere. Quite epic.
I am not keen on the snare. It seems a bit lifeless.
Anyway, it may seem like I don't like this track. I actually really enjoyed listening.
Peace..

Vocals from myself (as my precedent track, not really lyrics, just singing for fun :), some part have really fun lyrics :) i suggest you hearing the sample under renoise :) )
I try all dsk snare drum :), I was really enthusiast by this one sounding rock and fat ! I thought this was the best:), maybe i equalized it to harsh in high part :(
I don't have problem if you don't like it ! :) I prefer real subjective criticism !

With all synths I could make classical electro/techno piece,
but with a large range of accessible genre dskmusic vst offers
and with 6mo free (as vst take nothing) for vocal,
i thought, why not try a sort of rock song
(notice this genre is quite rare under renoise :) )

Hi,

wow - awesome track!
Very good use of the GuitarZ plugin - sounds almost real.
Also your use of percussion and your vocals are fantastic.
Impressive!

Justin

I do actually like your track. I am always partial to a bit of guitar :)
The tone of my comments maybe seem over critical.
That was not my intention.
When I first listened to it I thought "Wow, I really like this.."
But that may not have been much use.

You are obviously very skilled kalachnikov.
Yours was the first track I listened to because I enjoyed your previous ones so much..

Paul :)

....the mixing overall seems fine.
I just thought the vocals lacked clarity.
:)

Comment by kalachnikov on 2009-06-15 13:42:55

i wanted to put more volume on vocals to make them more audible,
but i hear the mix sounded less punchy and was a bit frustrated.
so clarity vs punch, i had to make a choice ... (maybe a little extremist one :) )

François :)

Really epic piece! Like the arpie guitar. Perhaps a bit too much distortion as overall FX (vocals and guitar). Very nice chord progressions.

I wish I could just sing out ad lib like you!
Have had many tunes were I had ideas for lyrics but never could implement them because time ran out.
This round, the time wasn't on my side at all. (two crashed computers and to much nite-life)
Hmm when will I grow up...
Ambient/Distortion was a nice combination :)

After trying to do my own example mix, I discovered that there is a reason why you didn't care to show us the lyrics... "...the compo thirty-niiine..." but the vocal is a nice touch.

When you mix and have a particular sound that people will expect to be the center of attention (like a vocal or lead guitar) try starting with only those lead sounds turned up on your mixer and gradually bring in the rest. Yes, you will lose some punch early on.

You get the punch back in your Master channel, by creating saturation. When I can only use the Renoise built-ins, I usually make saturation with the Bus Compressor set to high-knee and a subtle ratio like 1.4:1, set the attack somewhat long, then put a maximizer under it and make sure the maximizer boosts so that your drum hits tap it on while the lead melody or vocal isn't playing. If it sounds like the rest of the instruments duck away when the lead comes in, you've been too aggressive on the controls, but you've almost done it right. The whole mix should sound somewhat level.

There is a kind of sub-genre of guitar rock in tracking; it is rare because it is somewhat difficult to make rock guitar sounds that sound this good in the tracker, but when it happens correctly it is quite memorable. Nice job.

chunter : can you save effect chain ?, so i can import them to hear your impartial result :)
(i know i'm very agressive on maximization and some other punch stuff, i know bob katz theory, but ...)

I will try to have an example in about two or three days. Another issue that can come up is if certain EQ bands are "fighting" for all the amplitude in your mix, you can check for this in the spectrum analyzer.

This track rocks!
Present-day and fascinating. The sibilant sound makes an old "nostalgic" radio at a summer cottage comes to my mind

I usually check all track (instrus one per one and master) with ozone izotope (you can graphically see how to equalize(spectrum analyzer), chorus.flanger.phaser.etc (stereo image), compress (compression images), etc),
and if you disrecpect some rules, you know it, and why you do it.
I often repect the rules of 1 instrument = 1 frequency band,
but sometime it's not so manichaen, frequences fight can generate something that sound more hard, more full (with clarity sacrifices).
It's why you will find a lot of agressivity in compressions, distorsions, eq, etc.

This is, like your last tunes, very well done. And again a very good arrangement. Mellow and vox also nice. Only thing that I don't like so much this time ist the mix. Overall impression: too much is laying over each other, IMO much to much reverb for Vocals. I omitted vox reverb completely and didn't miss it.

Regarding master fx: I also know Izotope Ozone, and your master fx chains of your last songs reminded me a lot to Ozone's fx which was inspiring. Master reverb, Master exciter (=distortion). I guess you intended to replace Ozones fx with Renoise internal effects, right ? I think this is no bad idea, and I tried to use distortion as kind-of exciter, too, also mp2reverb as master reverb. But I think that this should be used with care. Especially the distortion is this time too much IMO (but worked good in Happy Light). Moreover, I generally think that Renoise's reverb is maybe too weak for mastering ? I'm not sure.

Nonetheless, this is an energetic nice Rock song, and I agree: to track Rock songs is not easy.

Sorry I haven't supplied an example replacement mix yet. The other day I literally saw my friend leave the bathroom with a gun in his hand, and I've spent most of my time trying to make sure he's not a hazard to himself. If you remind me I'll mix it later.
